The best dog treats - ever

Updated: Jan 13, 2019

So many people turn up at classes with a handful of kibble from the breakfast bowl. I mean, how hard would you work for a cornflake if that's what you'd had for breakfast? Or they come with big old crunchy treats that take a puppy half a minute to eat. We created these because we just couldn't find the perfect training treat to buy. The ideal training treat is small (because you don't want your pup to fill up on them), soft (because they need to be eaten quickly so you can get onto the next training repetition) and smelly (because most of all, you want your dog to LOVE them so she wants to work for the next one). Many people worry about feeding too many treats. It's like they equate treats with sweets, something you wouldn't want to feed a lot of. These are perfect because they are also nutritious so you can easily replace part of your dog's usual feed with these if you are concerned about your dog's weight.

HOTDOG’S FAMOUS FISH BAKE TREATS

400g tinned oily fish, eg pilchards, sardines, tuna (in oil or tomato sauce but not brine)

200g flour, preferably potato, rice or any other non-cereal flour

1 x large egg

1 tbspn vegetable oil

5 mins prep; 15 mins cook time

1. Pre-heat the oven to 200º/Fan 180º/Gas mark 4.

2. Tip everything into a mixing bowl and stir until you have a thick, smooth paste.

3. Lightly oil a baking tray with a rim. Spread mixture evenly over the tray to a depth of roughly 0.5cm.

4. Bake for around 15 mins. Remove from oven and leave to cool.

5. Cut into small cubes and place in snack bags, ready for your treat pouch.

The treats will keep 3-4 days in the fridge and can also be frozen.
